Last week I had the pleasure of joining my fellow Photowalking Utah friends at the 3rd Annual Studio Photowalk event. This is by far one of the most popular events of the year with 9 studio setups and approximately 200 photographers attending this go around. A full smorgasbord of learning, sharing, and fun.

Though I often like to try and be a part of putting on the Photowalking outings, this year I was arriving as an attendee only, planning to take in all the cool lighting set ups and do some learning myself. Studio lighting is definitely not my forte. I arrived a bit early though, realizing that we hadn’t done a good wrap up video in some time. So with lav mic in my bag, I decided to get with some interviews and get the raw footage for a video.

The generosity of the Utah photographer community never ceases to amaze me. From the many hours put in by Rich Legg and Nicole Young in the organization of this event to the many photographers and volunteers that came early to set up and then helping everyone that came through, it is a testament to the caliber of these folks. The day went smoothly even with the crazy number of people there and a few long lines. I saw smiles on faces everywhere and people enjoying the day.

See some of the excellent photos taken by the attendees in the Photowalking Utah Flickr pool.

See some of the echoes of the day in wrap ups appearing on a blog near you:

It’s that time again for the video of the most recent Photowalking Utah event. These videos only take me a few hours to edit and upload, but getting them online has a little delay while I wait for people to post their photos to the flickr group along with some good old fashioned procrastination on my part.

As described in my previous post, (also here and here) we had a very enjoyable event visiting the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. Bryan Jones, who made the access to the lab possible, later wrapped up the event well on his blog.

Hope you enjoy this wrap up video of the event. I’ll try to keep these up when I can attend as long as there is continuing interest. Please feel free to post this video to your site/blog, just please give a link back here for credit.

Well, better late than never, right? I had hoped to have this video done a week ago, but that’s often how things go.

In a previous post I mentioned that a couple of weeks I participated in my second outing with the Photowalking Utah flickr group. The turnout was tremendous, and the atmosphere electric (pun intended). With flashes firing as often as a paparazzi turnout for the hottest celeb, the room was full of excited photogs both sharing and receiving knowledge.

I have my own little set of lights, albeit low budget they do the job. I wanted to soak in the event, but figured I would bring along my video camera rather than take up time of the strobes that others could be enjoying. I was quickly happy that I did. With a nod to Robert Scoble and the videos he has done with the ever popular Thomas Hawk and others on various photowalks, I present to you my video rendition of our event.

I may just make this a regular thing, creating a video of our monthly events. Let me know what you think of this and perhaps thoughts on future ones (whether to do them, and if so how to do them better). I can already see how I could grab some better footage on future walks.

Again, thanks to the organizers, Rich Legg, Ann Torrence and Bryan Jones for getting this all started. Extra thanks to those putting in the time and effort to share their studio setups and knowledge on using them. If you are in the Utah area and have interest in hanging out with a bunch of other enthusiasts, I highly recommend you check out the group and join us on future events.

I am not a big thrill seeker, but I enjoy doing fun things and I guess I like a good thrill ride as good as the next. This video shows a home made (but looks pretty sturdy) ride that would be quite a kick. The more I watch this, the more I think it could go awry in so many ways. I had no idea they were going to pull it back soooo far! You’ll see what I mean. Looks like a blast though.

Another fun video today. Who knew when security cameras started to become more prevalent that they would provide us with such fun clips to be shared to millions. Getting gas at the pump is something that we do all to often, and usually it is a fairly straightforward experience. I have to say I praise the day that the pay at the pump model was invented. I only patronize stations that have this feature around.

Anyway, this is one of those gas station security videos that made me chuckle. Who hasn’t at one point in time stretched the pump around or over the car rather than admit your mistake of pulling in the wrong direction. Fortunately a lot of newer stations have pumps that can service either side of the car. Obviously this station was not one of the newer variety

I’m a project kinda guy. I enjoy making things, and I owe this to my dad. My dad could do anything, really. My dad built a TV from scratch (a kit, but he had to solder all the boards and put every last piece together), do you even know anyone that has done that? I really respect what he could do. The way I describe him was that he could do most anything, and if he couldn’t he would go check out a book and figure out how to do it. If he were alive today, he would absolutely love the Internet and how you can really find out how to do anything online.

I came across this site today and immediately I love it. MAKE is apparently a magazine (never heard of it previously) but they have been publishing a video podcast weekly on small projects you can do yourself. Most of these projects are fun or goofy, but emphasis on fun. I have already noted a few that I would like to do with my kids in the coming weeks or this summer.

Check them out, I enjoy the practical, explanatory approach of the videos. They guys cut from the same grain as the Mythbuster duo, which is a good thing to me. I can’t get enough of this kind of stuff.
