I had an amazing photo shoot tonight for my child portrait of the day. My co-worker’s daughter Lacy has Downs Syndrome, and she has one of the most energetic and contagious smiles. I knew when I started this challenge that I wanted to have a portrait of her as part of the “children” week.
I took over 75 photos in just a matter of minutes as she danced and explored around the field near my home. It was very hard, but I had to select just a couple to post, so I chose two from when she was discovering some of the small flowers in the field. Even though I wanted to capture her smile, and did in other frames, these two were my favorites.
I need your help deciding which of these two should be the “submission” for the day! Weigh in on your choice of this one or the next. Thanks!
Day 17 (week 3 day 3) of the September Portrait Challenge. See the others in my set for this challenge and submitted in the challenge group.

Oh Jeremy Lacey is so sweet! What a beautiful little girl!
Chosing is definately going to be a tough one, they are both great shots of Lacey, I can only imagine the others ones. My choice would be Discovery 2, Lacey looks so curious and innocent at the same time with the “discovery” of the flowers as she is reaching for them.
Gorgeous little girl Jeremy!! I can see why you wanted to photograph her
I am totally drawn to the first photo!! Cannot put my finger on why but she has this amazing look on her face. That said, I agree with everything Linda said about the second photo. There’s just that intangible something in the first, for me.
What a gorgeous child. Yes I have to agree the second one, because you can see her beautiful eyes.
Wow, beautiful images! I love the tenderness in the expressions captured. Awesome work with the light and DOF as well.
Beautiful little girl and beautiful photos! You really have a tough choice here! I love both of them but I guess I’d choose the first one because her expression is so sweet; kind of happy, excited and wonder of the beauty.

Hi Jeremy
I agree with Pam, I can’t quite put my finger on it and both are beautiful but I am going with the first one. Lacey’s joy and pleasure at what she is looking at and with that lovely smile has done it for me.
Both are great shots Jeremy!
Overall, I like the potential of the first one better. I like its wider, more open feel. The problem is I don’t think it’s open enough. A wider angle of view and not having her head cut in half by the grass/mountain separation line I think would have helped it.
So, in actual execution of the two, the second is better. The shallower DOF and pulling her right into the close foreground makes it a much stronger image.
Tough choice Jeremy! You’re right! Lacy is adorable and her innocence is pure joy to see. As someone who doesn’t know apples from oranges when it comes to photography, my comments would be lacking in submission potential. But I see the beauty in both pictures and agree with all of the comments mentioned above.
My choice, however, would be……….I can’t decide!
They both show the beauty of a child’s innocence!
Hi Jeremy
What a beautiful little girl Lacey is, my choice would be Discovery 2 because you can see more of her little angelic face.
Hi Jer. My choice is #2, I like the reaching out into life feeling from it.
However, you might want to ask the mom if she would like to send those to some of the national foundations for autisms to use as spokesmodels helping bridge the gap of understanding.
Yes, they’re that good.
It might be too late to help you choose, but I just wanted to tell you how beautiful these shots are. What a beautiful little girl and you captured her wonderfully.
