Doing Your Creative Warm-up
Feb 25th, 2007 by jeremy
I recently wrote about creative block, and how it is something I frequently deal with. I am in a profession that requires me to be creative on a daily basis, whether it is designing or writing. With that in mind, I came across an article titled “How to Find Your Creative Zen” which speaks directly to engaging your right side of your brain while putting your left side, well to the side.
I like the exercise of doing a stream of consciousness writing, haphazard and following whatever direction it takes you. I often try to do this in writing, but in design it tends to be a little more difficult to just go wherever. Even better, I like the writer’s suggestion to do have a daily 15 minute session of writing like this to creatively warm up your mind. I find that typically to start the day I read some news, take care of emails, etc., which are all very organized, left-brain activities.
Following the left-brain start of the day I try to get started on projects, which often has a very slow start up as I try to get in the creative mode. This week I am going to try the warm up routine and see where it takes me. I hope I can actually increase my productivity by taking these 15 minutes for some abstract creative writing. Perhaps I will come up with some good new ideas to write about as well.

Just a little follow up from me on the day after. I did my creative warm up this morning, and I do feel like the right side of my brain was more engaged. I like this idea and plan to stick with it. For those that happen on this topic and give it a try, be sure to share your experience here. I’d like to know what it has done for you.
Well this is interesting….I’ve started my serious 30 minutes a day workouts so why not flex my brain as well…I’ll keep you posted how it all feels…just hope I don’t sprain a brain cell…OUCH!
