Extreme Closeup
Aug 27th, 2007 by jeremy

I have been holding back for some time on posting some of my concert photos. I usually need to get permission on many of them to do most anything, but for a number of reasons I am going to go ahead and get some online. I would like to start discussing and upcoming project with my friend Donny Osmond, so I figure at the same time I can start sharing with his fans some of the photos I have taken.
As many readers here know, I have had the unique opportunity to travel with Donny and take many photos over the last several years on a variety of projects. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences and am very grateful for everything that has been made possible to me. I have also made mention previously of posting some of these old photos for fans as well over on my SmugMug site, which I still plan to do.
With that in mind, today is a shot taken last week in Salt Lake City and his recent concert. Typically I frame my shots to try and grab some color and background lights, but recently some fans asked that I get more “extreme closeups.” They love to see the detail, and frankly even the sweat. I say ewww, but then I do try to get what the fans like!
So here you go, first of many to come. Thanks again to all the great fans that have supported my efforts and become friends over the years as well. Here’s giving back to you.

Wow thanks for that Jeremy, what a marvelous picture of Donny. I also love the pictures you made in Vegas last March, I was there as well. A Lot of them are shown in the tourbook I bought in Wales at the Donny Comes Home Concert. You’re so lucky to have the opportunity to have worked for person as Donny is. He is such a people person, so kind and I guess a fine person to work for/with.
Thanks again Jeremy……!!!!
Anita
Beautiful as always Jeremy…you make art with your camera! And this subject..well…you know.
Thank you for sharing and looking forward to hearing all about your latest project…do you EVER rest my friend? I know I haven’t been posting much of late…but with school back in…I will have some more time…
Incredible Jeremy!! Thanks so much for sharing with us!! You’re the best
Hope all is well !!
Very Nice Jeremy!!!
it was nice to see you in SLC at the concert.
Fab photo as usual Jeremy thanks….and we all love the ‘extreme closeups’ lol
Wow Jeremy… veerrryy niiiice…! Thank you
*Phew* Is it hot in here… or is it just me?
Hi Jeremy, it is good to see a new photo of Donny that you have taken. You are a consummate master of the camera, and portraits seem to showcase your talent beautifully. I am a huge fan of Donny’s (and yours
) ) but I must say I don’t care for the extreme close-up. I much prefer the photos where your subject, especially Donny, is framed by unique lighting, or greenery, such as in an outside shot. Although, having said that, it is hard to take a bad shot of Mr. Donny Osmond, and not many men close to their 50th birthday, could have an extreme close-up photo taken of them and still manage to look like a 30 year old!! I look forward to hearing about the new project that you and Donny are working on.
hi jeremy…fab photo…I am with you on the sweat issue ewww lol, if you have any nice Tom pics feel free to share lol
what camera do you use?

Eva
Jeremy,
Somehow I feel as if I’m repeating myself. Anyway, not only do I appreciate the close-up, but I also had a great time from my seat watching you take photos at the SLC show.
Eva
Thanks for all the kind words. Taking these photos is a blast, but I enjoy sharing them just as much.
Helen – on the bottom of my photo posts I include the specifics about my camera, lens and settings used on the photo.

Hey Jeremy,
this is so weird! I have had an iPhone for several months now. Today, while waiting in the dr. Office I decided I would find a Donny pic to save and use for the wallpaper on my phone. It’s turned into a 3 hour browsing process—- until now! What a great photo. You are so lucky to get to work with such a great guy. Something else weird: when I went into the Dr.’s office I told the therapist, “oops! You caught me looking at Donny pictures!”. Then he said, ” I didn’t know you were a fan…” well, he was facinated by my 45 minute long story of how much my life has intertwined with him since I was in 4th grade & had childhood depression & seperation anxiety & was so miserable & scared all the time and had no idea why. EXCEPT on Friday nights at 7 pm I was in a happy place just by the caring way Donny made me feel when he so sincerely sang into the cameras every week. For the first time in years my mother saw me smile and be normal for an hour each week. She immediatly went out & bought me Donny albums, posters, shirts, etc. So I could have more to distract my mind from the horrible things it would put me through. Then I actually got to meet him when I was in 6th grade when he came to the MS Gulf Coast to sing for the Miss USA pageant ( 2 years in a row)
Eventually I grew out of the everyday anxiety (only seasonal from middle school on…)
In 2000 we did the unspeakable for southerner to do: we moved out of state to Colorado. Even worse: we had just had our 2nd baby (the only 2 grandkids on my parent’s side)
this was the 1st Christmas without my parent’s grandparents, etc. I found myself having the same anxiety as when I was little. Thank God I had a 4 year old & my baby to keep me busy & occupied!
One afternoon while driving around putting out flyers for a class I was teaching I kept hearing the SAME Christmas songs over & over on the radio.
So I ran in Sam Goody to get a new Christmas CD to listen to while driving around. There was a huge bin in the front with a big mixture of artists to pick from. I was digging for some good oldies I used to play at my grandparent’s house and Donny’s Christmas CD caught my eye. I thought, wow… I haven’tthought about him in years! I liked the songs on it so I bought it (FYI: I rarely buy things for myself…)
Got back in the car, opened the case with my keys & popped it in. I have to say what happened next was the most real psycology experiment I had ever been involved in!
The second I heard his voice, it immediatly calmed me & took me to that happy, comfortable place I would disappear to every Friday night. Amazing how the mind works, isn’t it??!!
Since I realized that my brain could work that way, I listened to that CD over & over all afternoon until the sun was setting over the mountains & I realized for the 1st time since I had been living in Colorado, that Donny was right on the other side of those mountains I was looking at…. I know it sounds so corny, right? But from that day on, I finally felt like this was my home and where we were meant to be. All from his voice triggering a happy time for me once again some 25 years later;
What’s even more strange is that my husband got me tickets to see Donny in Denver with Jim Brickman only 2 weeks after this all happened!
I was like a little girl again waiting to see him walk out on stage. The best Christmas present ever. To hear that voice in person. The voice that totally calms me. Now skip to spring of 2001:
an early b-day gift from my husband was tickets to see Donny in Denver (promoting his Broadway album) 2nd row, on the aisle, I was thrilled. Got to give him a bag of chocolate covered cream filled Krispy Kreme doughnuts & a card attached to them with a pic of Jay Osmond holding little Don Jr.’s hand while Donny sighned autographs at the airport in Mississippi in the early 80′s. (another bizarre thing: I was raised on Krispy kreme in the south & my whole family’s favorite is chocolate covered cream filled… Things like this were starting to freak me out a bit!)
I gave him the bag & card that night & wonder to this day if he got that picture of his 1st son looking so cute in his khaki pants, penny loafers &. Navy cardigan!
Then the continuation of freakiness continued that summer when I went to a convention in Vegas with my husband. My mom had gotten me Dinny’s book earlier that year, but having 2 small kids I could never start it so I took it to Vegas & read it by the pool for 2 days. When I read we both suffered from the same illness & had similar pressures as a child it was just one more thing that made me a little freaked out. Who would have ever thought of all of these little coincidences???!!! Not me! So after reading the book I had a whole new level of admiration and respect for this person. You are SO right: he is a great person—all around. I’m so impressed with how well he did for himself, his family, his career, just everything; admist his silent struggles.
(once again…like me)
I had such a new connection with this person and He probably has no idea how many differnt ways he helps people. If He has been there all through my life and gotten me through really hard times, I’m sure there are millions more. He should be so proud of that.
I was never a big religious person until that afternoon I played that Christmas CD & put everything together: God was working in my life & I didn’t even know it. (corny again) but I can’t help but believe God moved us to Colorado for several reasons: better education for the kids, better job for my husband, and to finally, to give me a peace I had never known before. I have gained so much courage, strength & belief in myself sice reading his book. In all areas of my life. He inspired me to go back to church and draw strength from God when I needed it (like he did)
I can’t stand when people make fun of him because they have no idea how many layers he has. Maybe they are jealous??!!;)
I have not seen him sice our 2nd trip to see him at the Orleans in Vegas. This was another time Gid stepped in for me:
we arrived on a Sat. Night & had tickets for Sunday night’s show. Some friend’s I met the previous year got their husbands to give me, my daughter & mom their tickets since they had already seen him Friday night. Thank God that happened because Donny had to cancel Sunday night’s show ( the one we had tickets to) due to throat issues from a sinus/cold he developed doing a drastic weather change from Euope to the US. How freaky was that??? A true gift from God if ya ask me! I’ve always said it’s the little things in life that make me so happy. Like a sunset, M&Ms & Donny Osmond’s voice!
Sorry this ran on so long, but I have developed a huge interest in photos, making videos of photos & putting them to music sice we got our Mac computer, and when I came across your photo of Donny as I was looking for one for my iPhone, I could just tell you were the type if person who likes a good story, since you tell stories through your photos
& like to share their simple beauty with everyone. And when I scrolled down & read you worked with him & had the same opinion of him as myself; I felt like I kinda knew you. Hence: the sharing of the LONG story!! I apologise for that, but if you ever work with him again & have down time between shots, ask if he remembers getting a pic of Don Jr. Around the age of 3 taken at the Air National Gaurd in Gulfport, Mississippi from the blond Krispy Kreme girl! Then again if I never get a response from you at all I would totally understand that too! (whew! That girl can talk! I bet you’ve said to yourself about 20 times by now! (and that’s the short version with no details!!!). Maybe I should just write a book;)
thanks for your photos & your time. I’m an officialfan of yours now after seeing your work.
Don’tever stop doing what you love,
Amber M. Lena
