Life Tip #3: Jump Out of Bed
Apr 18th, 2007 by jeremy
I often have a hard time getting out of bed. The bed is warm and comfy, and we have a wonderful bed. I’m a snuggler, I admit it. I know it isn’t manly, but I love my wife so it is ok, right? I’ll often turn off the alarm and curl up with my wife and just enjoy laying there and thinking about the day to come.
The problem is I’ll spend too much time just laying there and falling back to sleep again and again. It’s a vicious cycle. Whoever invented the snooze function on alarms is evil. Ok, maybe not evil, but that option has created a whole lazy scenario we easily fall into. How many times each morning do you hit snooze? Two times? Maybe three or four? The quality of sleep you get between those snoozes is definitely low, and nothing compared to if you remained in a deep sleep until the actual time you were going to get up anyway.
Many years ago I was listening to a motivational talk in which the speaker suggested we jump out of bed each morning to set the stage for how we would approach the day. If we drag through the first minutes and hour of our day, we are setting the tone for our day. If instead, we jump into the day physically, we will likely follow with the same mental attitude.
Ok, it may sound a bit corny, but I tried it and it really does work. It is whole “act as if” concept where if you don’t feel like doing something, act as if you do and eventually your brain will follow. We may not be able to control the circumstances we are in, but we can control our attitude towards it.
So, give it a try tomorrow morning and see how you can change your morning and perhaps you entire day. Let me know your results!

If the good Lord had meant for me to jump out of bed in the morning He would have put springs on the soles of my feet!! LOL I subscribe to the “greet the day gently” philosophy…I allow myself ONE snooze alarm interval and then slowly stretch myself into my morning. I suppose if I headed to bed a bit earlier, though, those first few steps *might* be a bit bouncier…….
Helene - so funny! As long as you stay disciplined, do what works for you.
I actually restart my “jumping” efforts this morning, and it made a world of difference. I woke right up and was not tempted to get back into bed. It really makes a difference for me. Now if I could just get some sprints on the soles of my feet, that would be cool!
