Quote: Don’t Be Afraid to Try

Never be afraid to try, remember…
Amateurs built the ark
Professionals built the Titanic
I am a big believer that most people can do most anything if they just try. There are limitations to what we can do, but attitude, effort and persistence can overcome most perceived obstacles.
Much of what I do professionally I have learned simply by reading, researching and trying. When I fail, I try to learn from the unsuccessful effort and get it right the next time. I am always anxious and excited to take on a new project that pushes the boundaries of what I know how to do. Through challenges we learn new things.
I have always been a little bothered by people that would rather look to someone else to do a job for them simply because they were afraid to try and make a mistake. This was especially try when I managed a computer lab at college. I attribute my current profession to my time in this lab, because it was during this time the Internet really emerged and I had the opportunity to work in this emerging field.
I was bothered, though, as a lab manager when people would ask for help on a fairly simple task, just to avoid making a mistake. I would always remind them that computers generally have an “undo” option, so don’t be afraid to try! Wouldn’t it be great if life and an “undo” like computers! That said, there are usually ways we can try things without passing a point of no return. If you are not afraid to try, you will find yourself venturing out into new, enjoyable territories. The small risk of failure is often worth the wonderful returns!
