What’s Gotta Stay

I am a big fan of college sports. I enjoy them much more than any professional sport for a lot of reasons. Aside for the overpriced tickets and attitudes of professional sports that I can’t stand, in college sports there is a completely different atmosphere that I love. The players actually make game changing mistakes and have the opportunity to make game changing plays. The fans are as loyal as they come and riveted to every moment of the game. They plead with the ref to make the right call and cheer their team to the very last moment of the game. I always prefer to sit in the student section whenever possible, even though I am getting to be an old timer alum these days.

I love a good football or basketball game, as much as the next college alum, but tonight I reminded myself how much I love one of the other sports…volleyball. Currently my alma mater men’s vball is ranked #3 in the nation with a very young team, and they played their last regular season game of the year tonight. My wife and I decided this would be a good outing for our date night and headed on over. Loved it. The energy was high, the team played great and beat the pants off of UC San Diego. Win or lose though, the arena was rockin’ and t fans were in full form. I am going to have to get myself to these games more often. There is something even better about being the crowd of a good college sport like this.

I imagine as my kids get old enough to start into the high school years I will feel much the same about going to their games as well. I think I might try and see if what sports some of the local kids are in and take my young ones to start and feel the fun of attending these games. Good times to be had for all.

So, next time you are wondering what movie you should go see or what you can do to get the family out of the house, see if there are any of these other sports matches being played.  Support these athletes,  and you may even find yourself enjoying a whole new wide world of sports.
