Tips for a Happier Life
Apr 15th, 2007 by jeremy
Today I had the opportunity to speak in my church meeting in front of our congregation. In preparing for the topic in which I was asked to speak, I decided to pattern some of my thoughts after the speech turned song “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen.” It’d been sometime since I listened to that song, so I pulled up and give it a once through to refresh my memory. I remember it was a pop hit even though all lyrics were simply spoken with some background music. It was the content of the song and the novelty in the way in which it was presented that made it such a quick hit. The writer suggestions were both witty and well written in a way that drove home several points that are simply good ideas for life.
Having completed my required speaking task, the preparation I had done before it got me thinking about a series of posts I might begin to offer here at What’s Gotta Stay. I have been thinking for some time about what kind of theme or a series I could offer that would be both interesting for readers here at WGS and fun for me to research and write about. So this is what I have come up with.
Tips for leading a happier life. I’ve been trying to think of some catchy name to call the series, but so far for a short version I’ve just come up with “Life Tips.” There’s actually a site out there located at lifetips.com that has tens of thousands of tips on various topics. It was actually a nice find that I’ve added to my bookmarks. Lifetips.com the masses writings from hundreds of different freelance writers into one searchable and “browsable” location and provides a wealth of useful information. My intention is not to replicate the efforts of what is being made there already, so I recommend you check it out and add it to your bookmarks as well if you find it interesting.
My idea is more akin to the spirit of Chicken Soup for the Soul, that is to provide an ongoing list of little ideas that you can do to make your day or that they have someone around you just a little better. They say the things such as waking up early tomorrow and making your spouse (or significant other) breakfast in bed, a simple idea of providing a little service for a friend or coworker, or an activity you can do with your family that takes you out of your everyday routine and provides something fun and interesting. It may be as simple as they small idea and how you can change your thinking in a positive way for even one day or work towards a habit that can improve your outlook on life.
By no means do I considers myself an expert in all these things, but I am willing to do a little research and write about different ideas. I sincerely hope I can collect suggestions from readers and even perhaps had a few guest writers to help contribute to this thread of ideas. If what I (or we) can produce over sometime can make a difference and even just a few of our lives, I will count it is well worth it. If nothing else I know my life will be better because of it.
I welcome any feedback or suggestions on this idea that I am planning to get started on this week. It’s a funny occasion to take a photo that corresponds or even simply enriches the idea and posting, I plan to do that as well. I helped us will be a fun and never, for both me and anyone who happens upon the site.

Pray for someone (or some people) you normally wouldn’t include in your prayers. It doesn’t hurt you and it helps someone else.
Hi Jeremy,
I love your ideas and this site. I met you for the first time in March in Vegas and just thought you were such a kind heart! I think its wonderful that you can touch the lives of so many people in a positive way. I will be sure to check your site daily to endure and pass on the positive thoughts in a world that is so harsh at times. I pray often and thank God for all he has blessed me with. That is one of the ways I stay positively motivated even through the challenges he presents to me. Its all in an old song “Smile” - though your heart is aching,
I don’t know the original artist but the words are what I live by.
Keep smiling! Hope to see you in Vegas in August!
Sincerely,
Doreen
Doreen - Thanks for your kind comments! I am enjoying the experience writing on this site, but it is comments like yours that really keep me going with it.
Open your eyes and your heart to who you pass each day. In our new city there are far more homeless then in the one we moved from. In this age of debit cards, I often don’t have cash on me when I walk by the homeless, and, in speaking with some of them, I have come to find out that in reality many of them don’t need cash per se, but what everyone does need is a warm smile and a heartfelt prayer. I can provide that freely.
….and can also provide food/cash on occasion.
Another thing I love to do is give heartfelt unexpected compliments. If I like someone’s outfit, I will let them know. If I think someone has a nice smile, or pretty eyes, I will let them know. If I like someone’s nail polish, I will let them know. I never give a compliment just to give one, it has to be sincere. The joy on someone’s face when you give them a little ego boost is priceless…..and many have told me “thanks you just made my day.” And all I did was let them know that someone actually noticed them.
